Brad… recent 2019 been watching a ton of your vblogs and reading Ed Miller (based on your suggestion). Attempting to update my “Harrington on Hold’em” game style to a modern day game. Over the last several years I’ve gone from a profitable cash 2-5 player to a breakeven player. No question that the game is getting more competitive and its reflecting in my results. I’ve recently put your strategies into play at a 1-2 game. I was pretty successful playing hands with more show equity and attacked weakness to a lot of success. Just wanted to say Thanks for showing me how to improve my game
That’s so cool to hear man. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed that my style of play has worked well for you. I hope you continue to have success and will be back to beating the 2/5 games soon. Thanks a lot for the comment.
Brad.. I wanted to share a hand with you giving you credit for how I played this hand. I’ve just finished reading “The Course” which has been amazing. Eyes wide open now. And watching your vlogs, I played a great hand. If you’ll endulge me to share it….
This is a 1-3 game with $500 stacks. Early position raises to $16. There are 3 callers and I’m BB. I have 55 so I make the easy call. Flop is A-3-4 with two hearts. Not terrible. I check to the initial raiser who c-bets $60. There’s $80 in the pot so its a good size bet. It folds to me and as I was watching your vlogs this weekend, I hear your voice in my head in this situation. The old me insta-folds. But Brad’s voice says, “I’m not sure if his c-bets is just a c-bet or he has an ace, its in his range, but I also have outs with a 5 or a gut shot. I could very well have the best hand if he doesn’t have the ace”. so I make the call. The turn is the beautiful 2 clubs. Holy smokes. Now. I’m not sure what to do here. I could check to the aggressor again, but I don’t want him to check back. If he has an ace, I should have value for both the turn and river. So I decide to bet $70. Oddly… he re-raises me to $170. I don’t have the nuts (5-6) but this hand is not in the players range. I have to think he has AK. He only has $100 behind, so I shove a stack of greens in and he pauses. Not that I had any fear I had the best hand, but always such a beautiful thing when your shove gives them pause. He goes tank. Finally he calls. River is 9 diamonds, no fear of flush and I drag a really nice $700 pot. Thank you for being the poker voice in my head.
Just seeing this now. Very nice win. Yeah I like the call on the flop. I’d probably fold to any reasonable sized bet on the turn if we didn’t hit. I don’t hate a check-raise there either. I’m glad it worked out.
Brad… I have a good question for you. How do you consider when to run pots multiple times? This is a tricky little thing but curious about your thoughts. Obviously this is not a probability or odds play, its purely a risk tolerance play. Typically I would think that if we have the lead… makes sense to only run it once as clearly this will give the best return over time. Is there another way that you think about it? Or is it just that… since the risk reward % doesn’t change, is it just a matter of how comfortable you are with the risk. Should I be thinking about it another way? Curious on your thoughts. Thanks
