So this is a hand from a session last night. I want to know what you guys think about my play against some different player types. I’m confident against this player I made a losing call but against what player types can I do this. This was like my 2nd orbit at the table.

    Hero: $200 cutoff A4hh

Pre-Flop: 2 limpers and I have A4hh. I raise to $13. Button, SB, BB and one limper calls.

Flop A64ddd: Flop top two so fairly happy but limper bets $60 with about $100 behind. I just sat down and don’t have any direct history but he has a lot of the hallmarks of a limp-call happy OMC (old man coffee). My thought was that I was 90% sure he had either a set of 66 or a flush. I call because I still have a very good hand, ahead of 64s and have outs to the flush. All others fold.

Turn 4c: Villain shoves rest, I call and win against 95dd.

So questions, against this perceived villain type should I fold on the flop here or am I destined to lose some? Against what types of villains can I be comfortable calling down unimproved or is this a fold on the turn unimproved?

A pot-sized donk bet is, at worst, going to be KdXx. The could be some 2-pair combos in here (he called a raise with 95s, he’s probably calling with 64s). Not quite a true OMC.

You’re getting 2:1 on a call, so need to be good 33% of the time. And you’ve only got 4 outs to improve (or 2 vs 66). And if you call flop, you have to call the turn jam on any non-diamond.

That said, this is probably a fold against most villains, especially at 1-2. Lately, I’ve been defaulting to “have I seen a person capable of making a play similar to this?” Been using this line of thinking in scenarios like:

    1. Is this limp-reraise anything but KK+?
    2. Are they betting 3- and 4-flush boards with non-flush hands?
    3. Are they betting one-liners without the straight?

People just have to make me think they’re capable of making these plays before I call. Probably a good fold most of the time here.

Thanks for the insight John. I label him an OMC because of a personal definition playing at Wild-Horse. I see a huge number of older players limp calling with a huge range of suited cards (23s, 95s, K4s etc) all the way up to QQ and KK especially in the 2-100 game. Maybe a better definition should be ultra passive.

Yeah I really wanted to just fold and move on but 2 pair seemed too good. It just seemed like then the worst hand I call with is 66 or maybe even AA (I am limping 44 and maybe 66)or KdXx and that range seems narrow, about 10% of my raising range (AA, KdJx+ and 98dd, T9d+)

Traditionally I’d have to say that when I see a big bet fire out, when they should be checking to the raiser, I get a little uncomfortable. Especially with the player type that you are describing. These guys tend not to be bluffing. You invested $13, so good time to just let it go. However, as this game can be kind of funny… its not outrageous that he flopped top top, or even has the Ace suited. This would be a weaker lead out bet, but hard to say what you are facing. So the only other comment I would add is how much the $200 stack means to you. If you are willing to reload a few more times… then I don’t have any issues with you going for it as you do have some outs and could just as easily be ahead.
But overall the read is that its too strong a bet and he’s going to shove after the turn, so fold you $13 investment. Good catch though.

    Interesting spot.
Just for fun, I gave villain a range.
Knowing he does that with 95s, I gave him a range of a bunch of suited cards.
    95s-98s, T5s-T9s, J6s-JTs, Q7s-QJs, K8s-KQs, (all only diamonds)
    44, 66, 64, 53 for a open ender, A4s and A6s (no diamonds).
Some AT+ for tp+fd (like AxTd)
And some KJo with one diamond.
Vs that range, it’s basically a flip (51/49).

That being said, does villain donks with other stuff than a made flush? (Like double draw or pair+draw) or would he rather go x/c (or x/r).

I removed everything that is not a made flush, and it becomes a 83/17 for him.

I guess it comes down to history and live reads as if he could do that with other things than a made flush
