Hi guys. Just wanted to get you feedback on this hand, and the decision I made preflop. To be honest, I’m am happy with my decision preflop, but wanted to hear your opinions as well. Please let me know below.

There are 3 villains in this hand.

V1 had just came to the table. He’s a middle-aged gentleman. He usually plays $4-8 limit hold-em. It wasn’t running tonight, so I guess he gave no-limit a try.

V2 is a NIT. I’ve seen them fold top-two and over-pairs on boards that he deems to be scary. He literally does not put money in the pot, unless he has the stone-cold nuts. He can be bluffed if you can find your spots.

V3 was new and was playing at the table for an hour. He was pretty active, but was not winning many pots either. He was playing very strong preflop, but pretty weak post-flop.

    Hero stack: 1200
    Hero hand: AKo
    Hero position: MP2

    V1 stack: 200
    V1 hand: reveal at end
    V1 position: UTG

    V2 stack: 160
    V2 hand: reveal at end
    V2 position: UTG+2

    V3 stack: 260
    V3 hand: reveal at end
    V3 position: MP1

    Preflop
    V1 opens to 15, V2 shoves, V3 cold-calls, Hero tank-tank-tank-folds, folds to V1, V1 tank-tank-tank-tank-calls

    Flop: A X X rainbow
V1 goes all in, V3 calls the all-in

    Turn: X

    River: X

V1 open seemed pretty standard, even for a limit player, he knew how much to open in this game. I thought he was at the top of his range with this open.

V2 shoves and I’m alarmed. He’s been folding a great deal of his hands as well. I pegged him as a NIT and likely to have a very strong holding: AA KK QQ

V3 cold calls the all-in and wanted to instantly muck.

I think about the action and what possible hands are out in front. I have blockers to AA and KK, but given the action, I was pretty sure one of those hands are out there. I leveled myself to think, I’m holding the case-ace and would not fair well vs a possible KK or even QQ. I mucked my hand thinking that I am drawing very thin against these players and their aggression. V1 tanks and makes the call and I was certain he was holding an Ace.

    The board runs Ace-high.

    V1 has AJo
    V2 has QQ
    V3 has KK

What a run-out. I thought, I missed an opportunity with AK again, but I was happy with my decision. Please let me know what you think. Did I make a bad fold with this big pot going multi-way?

It’s always frustrating to miss out on winning a big pot. But given your read of V2 and the fact that V3 cold called V2’s shove, I think it’s reasonable to fold AK here. A lot of folks would stack off with AK for <90bb as a default, but when you’re against 3 opponents, at least one of which is very likely to have a big pair, I think your fold is good.

I don’t hate your fold. I’ve made similar plays myself.

Honestly everyone but you played this hand pretty horrifically. 11x jamming all-in is pretty questionable, even with QQ+ (bad play with AA as well, you want to get value from these hands not win 7 BB). Flat calling (and not re-jamming) with KK is a bad play, no idea why you would want to entice others to call and see the flop multi-way. And calling $160 pre w/ AJo is probably the worst play of all.

Against this action, especially with V2’s history, it’s really hard to call with AKo (or even AKs). If you know you’re against QQ you call, but with 2 players in there, and the UTG raiser still to act – it’s hard to not be dominated by at least one person here.

Thank you Dave and John. I really do appreciate your thoughts. I was caught up in my own results and feeling disappointed, that I never considered how my opponents played here. It’s actually enlightening. I have a new appreciation for keeping notes and will refocus my studies. You guys just gave me the confidence I need to beat this game.

V2 with the QQ, he doesn’t play for value. It’s an easy fold to him cause he’ll shove when he makes the nuts. Kinda how Abe plays during Andrew and Brad’s LATB game.

V3 with KK. Had he shoved over the top, he probably would’ve gotten V1 to fold and taken the pot.
