Hi guys. This is my first time posting a hand and would like to continue to post future hands and would appreciate all feedback you can provide. I just recently started taking poker seriously and want to play a fundamentally strong game and advance my level of play. Please let me know your thoughts on this hand I played.

My image appears to be tight. I would even say it may be even weak tight. I know nothing about the villain in this hand, but I decided to put him on a right range playing me out of position.

    Game: $1-3 NL
    Hero stack: 550
    Hero position: utg+1
    Hero hand: A 10 spades

    V1 stack: 400
    V1 position: utg
    V1 hand: AJ offsuit

Preflop action: V1 limps, hero raises to 15, Button calls, V1 calls

    Flop: A 10 7 rainbow
Flop action: V1 checks, hero bets 20, button folds, V1 calls

    Turn: Q (completes the rainbow)
Turn action: check, check (I was thinking of pot control. In case he may have limp called with AQ for some odd reason)

    River: 4x
River action: V1 bets $40, hero calls and wins with two pair.

I think my preflop play was pretty standard. On the flop, I hit top two with a back-door flush draw. I lead for $20 and to be honest, I wasn’t sure what hands I was getting value for. $20 was a bet I chose to keep my opponents in with their hands, whatever it may be.

The turn made me worry a little about my opponent taking the lead with a better two-pair, so I decided to pot control since I was in position.

The river bet from the villain was an easy enough call, but going through my notes off table, it appears I may have missed some value here. It was approximately a half pot bet. I probably could have raised him 2.5x to get a little more value from his ace. I miss a lot of value in spots like this where I fear being outdrawn. I was wondering if this is an okay play to make. Please let me know your thoughts, no matter how honest it may be =).

Yeah, I think you missed quite a bit of value here.

Pre-flop and flop seem pretty standard. You’ve got a good hand pre-flop and you crush the flop, always good to put money in. The only hands that could beat you here is 77, villain should have AA or TT here.

On the turn, there are only two possible hands villain can have here that now beat you – AQ and KJ. But there are so many hands you can still get value from. QT improved to 2 pair, A7 can’t fold, KQ and QJ improved to a pair plus straight draw. AK and AJ are still calling, A9 and A8 probably as well. If he decided to play JJ slow he now has a gutter and may call. I just think there are so many more hands that you still beat that will call than the hands that beat you.

The lower levels are about making hands and getting value. As far as bet sizing, I like the $15 pre-flop and the $20 on the flop. I’d probably size $45-60 on the turn, then $75-$120, all depending on the villain. But you’ve got position, when he checks you need to bet.

    @John S.

Thank you so much for the feedback. My two major leaks are: (1) I have a hard time narrowing my opponents range, (2) I get gun-shy on later streets when the board gets scary, no matter what the action. I have a hard time getting over this.

I checked the different combinations of hands villain could be holding, in an amateurish way =) and found that:

    37 hand beat me
    87 hands I beat

I feel like a fish now looking at this result. I will try my best to start applying pressure more intelligently. Thank you again for your feedback. I’ll post a new hand after tonights session!

I think the hardest thing for amateurs to get comfortable with is the variance. Yes, there are hands that beat you, but you are good so much of the time you have to go for value.

The pot on the flop was about 45. I bet out for approximately 1/2 pot and get one caller. Pot is now 85. I agree John, a 60-70 bet would be in order here.

The pot would then be about 150sih. Villain would’ve probably called if I bet out for 1/2 pot again.

Yea I left alot of chips on the table. My flop and turn sizing are all too small.
