HanParticipantHi guys. I had a session this weekend where the 1-3 games were not very good. There was a game at the $2-5 table with a seat open. I thought I should give it a stab this night. I have two hands that I made note of. I ended the session up 200, but it was a very interesting experience.
First Hand to note
Hero stack: 800
Hero Hand: AKd
Hero Position: SbV1 stack: 1000
V1 Hand: xx
V1 Position: Mp1Preflop:
Utg opens to 15, V1 calls, Cut calls, hero raise to 50, Utg folds, V1 calls, Cut callsFlop: 4 Q K rainbow
Hero bets 75, V1 tank folds.Second Hand to note
Hero Stac

ParticipantI find that I play better at 3/5 than I do at 2/3. I tend to play too wide at lower stakes at times, and the higher stakes makes my pre-flop range more solid. I also think I tend to pay attention more and read situations better.
Only advice I can give on this hand is to 3-bet larger. With the raise and 2 callers, plus the blinds, the pot is $52, and you only raise to $50. $50 is fine if there are no callers, but with callers you need to up it. You don’t want to go 4-ways to the flop with any hand, and you want people to respect your raise whether it’s with premium or light. A lot of people use the 3x + 1x per every caller. So in this case it’s $45 with just the raiser, $60 with 1 caller, $75 with 2, etc. If you’re OOP you want to go bigger as well, since you are at a disadvantage post. You don’t have to use the 3x as a hard rule, but it’s kind of a guideline. I’d probably make this at least $75 given your position and the callers.

HanParticipantHi John. Thanks for the tip. I really like the experience. Thank you for the great advice. I’ll keep a note of it, although I don’t I’ll be playing 2-5 for a while.
I didnt get a chance to add the table dynamics at play. I was pretty much being bullied at this table as the regulars would know that I usually play the lower stakes.
I would enter a pot very passively and would be raised out of a pot. I felt like it was my first time playing poker all over again. This hand gave me my confidence back, when I made my stand and got the Sharks to fold a hand. Pretty easy once you have a hand.

ParticipantFor me, that’s the sort of thing that I think made me a better player. The first time I sat down at the 3/5 where I play, players were definitely targeting me. Everyone knew each other, most by name, and I was the lone unknown.
Where moving up really helped me is the passiveness that I had in the lower limits. You get a lot more limped pots at 1/2 and 2/3, and I think a lot of people tend to play more passively because of that.
When I moved up, there were a lot less limped pots, so I was much more selective as to when I put chips into the pot. You really can’t be tedious or you will get runover. If you want in the pot, you raise. You learn to pay attention to your position (and their position) more. And you learn to construct hand ranges better because of that.
