ParticipantAt my local casino (Hollywood Park Casino in Los Angeles), the 1/2 table has a max buy-in of $100. Even with this short max buy-in, many players opt to buy in for $60 or even $40. With such a short stack game, I try to play a tight range and play ABC poker against loose/fishy 1/2 players. However, I still find it difficult to make a profit because stack depths are so low and because the rake is EXTREMELY high in Los Angeles, e.g 6 way limp pots resulting in roughly 3 dollars in the middle after the rake.
With this casino being the only one near me, I was wondering if I should still being playing this stake or even at this casino anymore. The second lowest game is 3/5 with a 300 max buy in with a high hourly rake. I am skeptical about playing this game because the rake is high in this game as well, and I do not have a large bankroll, as I am a college student looking to play a couple times a week.
Any tips, recommendations, or advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

Brad OwenKeymasterI don’t know why they set games up like that. If it were me I wouldn’t play them. There are so many casinos in LA though. Go check out a different one with better structured games.

806erParticipantDoes the Hustler have different buy in structures? If so, the extra drive time may be worth it.

ParticipantI play regularly at 1/2 at HPC as well. Agreed, the rake sucks but you’ll find similar or higher rakes at other LA casino cash games. And if it’s not the rakes then it’s the blinds (ie 1/3 with 100 max buy in). Best way I’ve found to combat this somewhat is just play TAG and hope to hit. Also difficult to play at 1/2 ESP at HPC simply bc the players at the lowest stakes are either the ones that make bad plays and still win, or the good players looking to build a bankroll and move to 3/5.
With so much variance at 1/2 it makes consistent wins difficult. I would suggest building a bankroll and move to 3/5. At least at that level the caliber of players is more consistent, as well as the rake just being $1 more but with deeper stacks. Just nutfarm until you hit 500 then open up your range a bit and iso the looser players. If you’re playing well at 1/2 and just getting sucked out on it’s unfortunate but your skills will transfer over.
