I’m probably calling the river. There’s plenty of hands you beat in this situation (AK, Ad/X, KQ, AA). The river bet seems like an overbet to chase you away and your hand was well concealed with how it was played. It smells like trip Ks with the way the betting played out.

    Toho,

Here’s my two cents (Please take constructively)

I think you should have called the River and I think the way you played this hand ended up costing you money when you should have won a big pot.

    You wrote after the Flop:
Pot has $17, You flopped a straight, checked, he bet 10 and you just called. You have the best hand atm with no value extracted and doesn’t look like you put him on a hand.

I think the better play would have been check, he bets, you reraise to 45. Pot is now 75 with 35 to call. If he calls you could better define his range, which if he does here I’m putting him on Ace King and if he Reraises me I’m thinking he has a set. I think you played this hand way too passively for the position you were in.

Let’s say he calls your raise: $110 in the pot Turn is the Ks, you can either bet or check-raise because we put him on A-K. I would check and whatever he bets times it by 4 or push all in. If he calls, you still have the best hand and need to avoid the board pairing which should put you around an almost 80% favourite.

Final note-a tank check is a sign of weakness, he may have had trip kings and figured you missed the flush/or a draw with his final bet based on the tanking.

“Experienced player” is not a particularly helpful description. I guess you also hit a pet peeve of mine. In most card rooms, the term “local” or “regular” is meant to describe a player who is experienced, plays a lot, is good, and generally should be avoided. That definition or implied meaning has always bothered me a lot (full disclosure, I would not be considered a regular or local in any card room). Experienced players, locals, and regulars come in all sorts of “flavors”. There are experienced calling stations. There are plenty of regular nits. There are locals who play the role of table bully. Most locals play by a culture that is exploitable one you understand it (in Florida, for example, I played in a card room where AK was conservatievly limped pre flop and then played in a try trapping fashion when hit; feeling it was hidden strength, no one wanted to fold the hand at any point so you could get good value from it if you could beat top pair).

I digress. I might take a line similar to the Villain if I held A10, AK, or AQ of Diamonds. I would not bet $100 on the river, though, with a paired board and the nut flush. But I would bet with the nut flush and no sign of strength from my opponent (betting maybe 50% to 75% of the $100 pot). I think the correct play here is very villain dependent. I lean slightly towards a fold (not knowing the villian), but if I think my opponent is either bluffy, tilting, overly aggressive, or just not that smart, I would call. As others have said, you beat hands like K-X or AA. Betting $100 here with trips is especially fool hearty (if betting for value) because so many potential holdings that call have you beat. AK can hope to be called by KQ, but not sure you beat any other hands that call. I could see trips here betting small and hoping for crying calls from weaker two pair type hands. So, the big bet is polarity. Either this is a monster or a bluff. So, I have to assess the chances this particular villian might bluff.
