Hero $600 effective stacks Q6 suits spades.
Position Button. 3 people limp, I limp button. Which I almost never limp. Big blind old man tight aggressive Raises to $23. 3 limpers call and I call. 5 players to the flop. Current pot is now $116. Flop 5 spade, Q hearts, 4 Hearts
BB old man leads out $105. Folds around to cut off the guys tanks for a long time and then folds. I feel like because the guy tanked for so long he probably had a queen which he later confirmed that he had Q10. So with 3 queens accounted for its less likely the old man has one. I put the old man on a strong range AK, AQ, AA, or KK, JJ. I call $105. Turn brings 7 of hearts. So the front door flush comes in and I now have an open ended straight draw. Old man checks to me. I decided to turn my hand into a bluff and try and represent the flush. I bet $100 into a $326 pot and the old man quickly calls. River is 7 of clubs. At this point I am pretty much done with the hand the pot is $526 and I have decent show down value. Old man checks and I check back. Old man shows AK for Ace high. I show my Q6 suited and win the pot. I feel like I really misplayed this hand and would really appreciate any feed back the community could give me Thanks in advance.07/12/2018 at 7:32 pm #2953John SParticipantHonestly, with the exception of pre-flop, I think you played this hand okay.
Pre-flop, this should pretty much always be a fold. Yeah, it’s a decently high suited hand on the button, and it’s just a limped pot, but in the long run you lose more than you win when you hit. So you limp, old man raises, and everyone calls, now again you’re getting a decent price with this hand. I used to play hands like this in these situations, and I realized I ended up just burning that pre-flop money or getting second best hand that I took it out of my range. I like the fold or raise here.
But since you called, you have to play the hand, and I think you played it pretty well. The old man’s 90% pot-sized bet tells us one of two things – he’s got AA or KK and is scared of the flush draw, or he’s got AK and is just trying to rep the over pair and take it down. When cutoff tanks you put him on the other Q. You call here, which isn’t a play a lot of guys at this level will make.
On the turn, I don’t really like the the bet size. Either check or make it bigger. That heart scares him, whether he’s got an overpair or just AK. The small bet feels like a blocker or a weak steal attempt. I think you need to go $175+ if you expect to get a fold here.
River – check this all day. No need to go for value, I don’t see how worse ever calls you.

I definitely should have folded pre-flop and I should keep my over all range stronger. I like your sizing suggestion of $175 on the turn. I’m not a very comfortable bluffer and it is definitely one of my many weaknesses as a poker player. As played I completely agree that it turns into a blocker bet at the $100 size I chose. Thanks again your insight is helpful.

It’s good to bluff at times, and it’s good to get caught at times because you get paid off later, but at lower levels you really aren’t deep enough that often to need to bluff. 1/3 is really more about making hands and getting value.
It’s important to remember why we are betting. Here you either 1. bluffing and trying to represent the flush, or 2. thinking you have the best hand trying to deny a free/cheap card to AK. Either way, the 30% pot sized bet doesn’t represent value well. It looks like either you’re trying to go for really small value to get paid off for your hand (which generally doesn’t make sense on a wet board with the river still to come) or a blocker bet.

This game was action and it was only my 2nd time here. The game was playing more like 2/5 which I have hardly any experience at. At my regular game I get away with alot of small bluffs that I size like value bets. I have almost no experience with bluffs bigger than a $100. So as you pointed out $175 would be a much better sizing if I was hoping to get a fold. I totally messed up the sizing. I think I just still get nervous about bluffing in general which is something I need to work on. I get what your saying about bluffing not being necessary at the 1/3 level and most of the time I play a strong range and bet for value. On this particular day I was definitely out of my comfort zone. Anyways thanks again for your feedback.
