    Hi guys,

I had a good session the other night at 2/3 NL game ($100-$200 buy in). I felt like I mixed in a good amount of bluffs and want to see if this particular move was lucky or the right play.

I look down at AdJd on the CO ($425).

UTG limps ($680) and the rest fold to me. I raise to $15. BTN folds, SB calls ($200 new player), BB calls ($150), UTG calls.

Flop: 7d5c3s. SB opens for $25. BB calls, UTG calls, and I just decide to call to see what happens on the turn.

Turn: 6c. SB puts out a C bet of $50. BB folds. UTG folds. My first thought was to fold too but I looked at him and when I did he got kind of fidgety/moving around in his seat and thought maybe he has a AK, AQ, KQ, KJ, or QJ that missed too. After thinking for a bit, I put in a raise to $140 to represent the straight/low set/low two pair. He ends up folding and I win the hand.

After SB puts out two barrels do you think I was playing too risky or do you think I made the right play? (I know I won but I want to see if this was the right strategy in my position and heads up). Would you have played it differently or sized up differently?

    Thanks!

I think in these severe cap games, it better to play solid poker than exploitative.

As played, I think preflop, you could’ve raises higher, to 18-20. This would punish the limpers and discourage the hand from going multiway.

On the flop, I’m not in love with your call here. We have nothing in a multiway pot. Sure we are in position with two overs, but the SB bet into 3 other players left to act. Usually a sign of strength. The BB and UTG could easily have A7, A5, A3. We’d be drawing pretty thin if the turn were to bring an Ace. It a hairy spot, I’d like a fold here.

On the turn, the pot is 350 with your raise, which puts him all in. It’s 110 for him to call, laying him almost 3-1. The board also got draw heavy as well. Your raise is very polarizing here. You’re repping an over-pair, or 89. There could be some A4 in your range as well. However, I think this board favors the SB calling range more often.

It’s a stone-bluff and I’m glad you got it through. However, I think its high variance as played.
