Players Championship at Foxwoods. Top 200 for last two months qualify, we had 140 show up, its a freeroll and top 60 get paid. 60th place was $250 and 45th was $300, etc….top prize was $6500.

Anyways, down to 60 as we hit the break and I come back to the table with 77k with the average stack being right around 42k. Blinds are 500 1500-3000. (Side note: this is where bodies start to fly since everyone is in the money so a bit of patience can easily jump you 20 spots when the money starts to get a bit better.)

I am on the button and a middle position player with about 100K opens to 10K and I look down at AQ hearts. I call and we go heads up to a flop of A22 rainbow. He jams. I give it a moment of thought and call since I am dead to AK and AA (which I block) and he turns over AK off and the board runs out with bricks sending me home in 55th.

Unlucky? Should I find a fold there and avoid playing for my whole stack when I am not in any danger of being blinded out and the field will start to get smaller very quickly? Or that’s poker and sometimes a good hand just gets beat?

With him covering you, it probably comes down to ladder up consideration. It is certainly a cooler, but as you mentioned you lose to AA, any combination of AK and any two. The larger stack could be putting pressure on with a weaker Ace, but would he jeopardize 3/4 of his stack in that position, which he partially did, since he did not have a 2.

Since you will be able to pick off lower stacks yourself, it is possible to find a fold, although it is a tough lay down.
