Bankroll, I heard different things. 20 Buy-ins for Cash, 25 Buy-ins for Tournaments. But is there more to it than that?

I’m personally a bankroll nit. I start a new stakes level with 60 buy-ins, drop back down stakes if i fall below 50, and build my roll at each level until i reach 120 (this would be 60 buy-ins at the next level). It’s easier to be a bankroll nit online than in live games but better to air on the side of cautious IMO.

Typically when you’re talking about “buy-ins” for cash games you should be discussing whatever the maximum is. So at 1/2, 1/3 this is typical $300 although it varies, 2/5 is typical $1000 although that can vary. If your bankroll isn’t that large even for the lower stakes than you can consider not buying in for the max, but generally under 100bb is going to be ill-advised.
For tournaments, you would go by what your “average buy-in” is and this includes the rake, as in the total entry of the tournament not just what goes into the prize pool. A lot of people use 100 for tournaments.

I just wrote a lengthy answer about this same question on a topic called “How to manage a newly established bankroll?”check it out.
but I am a 5% guy for cash games. never more than 5% of BR on the table. Im not big into tournys, but most ppl i know use 2% or less for tournys. As long as you stick to a percentage, you should never go broke because you will never allow yourself yo use the last of your roll (all 100%).
Agree with everything above about small stakes online. To play live you really need minimum 2k to start BR management(assuming you are a winning player). Online you can do anything you can afford.
At the end of the day you need to keep really good, clear, specific records. Then the rest kinda falls in place on its own as you can see where you are doing well and you are not. I dont know how many people I know try to take poker “seriously” with no records. Cant be done IMO.
