Hey All,
I play 2/5. I’ve been running dead for a few weeks now and it’s making me second guess my bet sizing. I’m pretty new to poker, but have a question on bet sizing. Please don’t crucify me if this is a dumb question.
I am getting AK AQ KQ AJ and raising pre flop. When I’m out of position, I put out cbets, but I whif the flop. When people call behind me and my card doesn’t come on the turn, what do you do? Just check and let position bluff you or take down the pot? Is this just the nature of the beast? I can’t imagine others catch a piece of the flop all the time against me when they’re in the same situation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.07/26/2017 at 6:05 am #1051StephenParticipantThere is a lot of information that is left out of your question in my opinion like raise size, stack size, # of callers, position, flop, FBet, turn, TBet. In general, if you are playing at a table and CBetting 100% of your opens then good players are going to pick up on that an like look you up on any flop and with any pairs or draws that they catch.
If you can keep a log of some of the hand specifics and bring them to the forum I’m confident the folks on here will be able to give you some great feedback.

You need to balance check-call ranges OOP and have an idea of what to check-call with (should be a mix of made hands and bluffs) and which to cbet with and then double-barrel. A lot of Villains have picked up on floating the flop with any pair or draw and then dumping the turn when their is no more runner-runner help and hope all but dries up. You should also mix in some delayed c-bet as part of the strategy. Also, depending on board texture, AQo could be the legit best hand. Villain might have KJ, KQ, AT, etc.

If I whiff heads up, I may check, but when there are 2+ I almost always cbet if I whiff. Just feels like I get called all the time recently when whiffing.

EP with a top-o-my range hand, do I flat, lead or 3-bet, if I whiff do I play it like I crushed or get timid. I often would find myself just going super passive after leading or raising and losing more than I felt I should have, mostly because I just wasn’t sure what to do next.
After reading a ton on this specific issue and more importantly, I think, looking back at my own hand history and thinking about the game I was in I started to see where I was allowing myself to be exploited (on the turn for me). I’m still shit in this spot, but It’s getting much easier to decide how to adjust for specific tables (there is no 100% strategy of course) and purposefully mixing up my range in the process, because I’m trying to think about it before it becomes an issue.
I think I (and a lot of people) get emotional in EP about laying down what we perceive to be “top” of our range hands. Trying to remove cash and ego will help promote correct decision making, even if that decision ultimately hurts both.
FYI I’m just a rec player trying to get better so take any advise I have with a huge grain of salt. Love this board, it’s always helping me think differently. Cheers.
