this hand was played at 1/3 NLH. I was playing with about $750 effective.8 handed and comparably easy table with a lot of limping. However, a villain in this play is a tight-aggressive grinder. I have seen him many times I was at the casino sitting at 1/3 with over $2000.
Hero: a pocket 4s. button. $ 700 effective
Villain : UTG. covers me. His hand reveals at the end.Preflop: villain and 3 other players limped. I raised with pocket 4s to 10$. Maybe a mistake, but i like to raise small with a pair at late positions. villain and initial callers called.
Flop comes; K47 rainbow. villain bet 15. mp called. I raised to 45. Villain 3 betted to 125. mp folded. At this point, I was not too happy with a bottom set because the board was very dry. Only hands I put the opponent on were maybe straight draw or set of 7s. set of KK would have raised on reflow, and Top pair with good kicker would not play this way. Also, he is not the type of player who would limp with K7 or K4 in UTG. At the same time, I have a set. I can’t fold a set yet.
Turn comes Q. (don’t remember if it brought any backdoor flush draw.) anyway he checked to me. I didn’t want to check with a set. i bet 125. He check-raised to 300. Before he re-raised me i saw his eyes quickly glanced at my stack. (not a good sign for me)
This was a weird spot. I don’t see any hand he would play this way other than set of 7s. But I have never run into a set over set situation, and i watched many youtube videos about some players were criticized for folding a set. So i called. At this point, I was really hoping to spike another 4. Really..
River blanked. He bets 250. I called. Again, i have a set. He shows a pocket 77s. I think he purposely did not go all in but bets 250, but it was just enough to cover my exact $247 chips. When he glanced at my chip i think it was all planned out for him. He knew exactly what i had and he planned out executed his plan so perfectly.
My question is “is this a type of situation where you can fold your bottom set..”
