So I live in Arizona where we do not have “No-Limit” poker. The best we offer is a spread limit game. I was playing 2-3 spread where the blinds are $2 and $3 and the max bet is $300. I buy into the game for $300 and a few hands in I have pocket 8s on the button and there are a few limpers ahead of me so I make it $20. Big blind calls and one of the limpers call. The flop comes 8 5 3 with the 5 3 of diamonds. BB checks, limper in mid position bets $30, I raise to $100 and the BB cold calls the $100 (he has about $450 in front of him). The limper in mid position folds and we see the turn. Now in my head I’m trying to figure out what the BB could be cold calling with and assume he has 2 pair or a flush draw. The turn is the 2 of diamonds and the BB leads out for $100, I call hoping to fill up on the river and the river is the Ace of hearts (so no full house). The BB bets $100 again. Now I think to myself that I am probably beat but there is about $600 in the pot and its only another $100 to call, so I called and he showed K10 of diamonds for the flush. Now my question is could/should I have folded the river or should I have raised more on the flop. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

When MP donk-folds that doesn’t make much sense, and BB check-calling your raise on the flop with a bettor acting behind is pretty strong. He’s either got a set or a draw (maybe an overpair like 99), he really shouldn’t be calling here with just top pair.
When the diamond comes and he leads, that’s likely a flush. I don’t mind calling here since you have the redraw and he could slow down on the river. When the river bricks and he bets again, it really does look like you’re beat, but the price is so good it’s hard not to look him up. Not sure what I would do at the table. I don’t hate either option given the price. I wouldn’t fault a fold or a call. There’s also a one-liner to a 4 out there, so if somehow he has a weird 4 (54, 34, 84, etc), that now beats you too. All you’ve got is a bluff catcher. Maybe that’s another nudge in the direction of fold.

Oddly his river bet is so light that its hard not to call. Easily can argue that you have to pay him off. However, when he doesn’t slow down on the flush card… 99% he’s made the flush. I think a really good player could fold there if he’s convinced.
Here’s the other question… if he doesn’t have the flush… what is he betting? I agree with John S that the read is fold, but given the very low river bet, I could justify the call. Though I’m still thinking I’m 85% beat. Sometimes Poker is just evil. 🙂02/14/2019 at 7:44 pm #3707Hans GrieseParticipantYou’re beat probably 90% of the time. You think you’re beat 100% of the time. Should be a fold. But 7-1 on the pot….it’s a hard one to get away from. I’d have probably called while reaching for some reload money.
Poker is easy and fun, right?

I like the flop raise and the amount. We have top set, which makes it less likely the villain has top-pair here. The board is draw heavy and we need to deny-equity making it unprofitable for them.
When the obvious draw comes in, it becomes a math problem from there. It sucks to brick out on the river and lost a pot. However, given the river-odds, I’d be giving this villain a “Thank you” note for making it this cheap!
