Hello all.
I’m playing in my first no limit hold’em tourny in two weeks. It’s $100 buy in and only about 80-100 players. I have played poker for 2 years and am getting better. What’s the best way to push myself deep in this tournament and how can I adjust my style for a tournament. I’m worried about being to patient and blinding myself down. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Trust your read, respect your ranges, don’t be afraid to make a play. when ( or if) the blinds are high and you have a 15-25 big blind stack, you could prepare yourself by looking up some push/fold charts. Thats some basic advice that should help you with your first tourney
Good luck!

Generally these tournaments have pretty fast blind levels (anywhere from 10 minutes to maybe 30 minutes if you’re lucky). The fast the blinds go up, the faster your chips lose value. I don’t really play tournaments anymore because of this. You generally need to chip up pretty quick or you become short-stacked, so you often need to get lucky early on to make a deep run.
That said, I would play tight and aggressive. A lot of players in these tournaments are going to play a lot of hands and don’t like folding their decent hands. When you make a good hand, bet. Don’t bluff much and don’t bluff catch, it’s just not a good strategy unless you have a big stack and you’re trying to bully people later on when you’re nearing the bubble.

Something I’ve run across in tournaments is that when people get short stacked they often will jam all in slightly looser than they would in cash games…KQ, KJ, QJs, AXs, etc. At times I’ve seen lower suited connectors jam. Just something to keep in mind. Also if it is a rebuy tournament make a note of where the cut off for rebuy happens. I can’t count how many people I’ve seen jam with any two cards right before the rebuy period ends just to try and either double up or go buy back in. Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Cheers!!! -
