$100 max bet…sounds like Colorado.
First time out, or even anytime at a table of people you don’t know, play tight at first and see how the others are playing. Figure out their styles so that when you do get into a hand, you can define their ranges better. A rule of thumb that has served me well in the smallest game in the room is that calling a big bet on the river with top pair/top kicker (or an overpair) or less is generally a losing play. Lots of regs sit in those games waiting for beginners to overplay their top/top.
