Playing 3/5 NLH in position I faced a small raise of $15 pre flop with A9 spades. Flop brings Ah 5s 7s. Check to me, I bet $40, SB calls, UTG calls, all others fold. Turn is 4c. Check to me, I bet $40, SB calls, UTG folds. I have roughly $200 behind to the river. River is a blank, no straights, no flushes. Checked to me again, I make it $75 and SB instantly tosses in $300 in $100 chips. He started the hand with probably $1000.

Here’s where is gets interesting, I’m thinking over the hand and the action, feeling like I’m good. After tanking a while I look at the player and he slides his two cards towards me with the motion of “you can look at either one card you choose”. I instantly said “ah so you have Kings” thinking he would be ok with me turning over either card.

I thought some more about sets he could have flopped, likely a bigger ace. Ultimately I fold and grab one of his cards, a Ten. He turns the other over to show the other 10. Made me sick cause it was the same exact read basically as him having kings. An overpair to all the cards but the ace which I paired.

What would you have done guys?

I think we need more information. How has this player been playing so far? How many people saw the flop? There are definite bet sizing issues in this hand that can be better broken down once we have the rest of the information.

I think Tony’s assessment is spot on. Your bet sizing mistakes on the turn and river put you in a tough spot and seem to make it easy for the other player to put you on a weak ace and bluff you off of it. I think the flop bet is fine but the turn bet needs to be bigger.

Yes i agree. A bigger turn bet commits you and he either bluffs off to you and your forced to call getting a great price you take down the pot on the turn.
