    Hey guys,

I played this hand in a 1/2 session yesterday and I would like some feedback.

It’s a straddle pot. I look at ATo (Cutoff). Villain UTG+1 or +2 I don’t remember is a weird guy who drank a lot that night. Still plays pretty tight if I remember correctly. My image is very tight (Even if I feel nobody notice that in 1/2…) and I am covering all the table by at least 2.5x.

He opens to 12 and I call. Flop comes T 8 8 rainbow.
He checked, I bet 15 and he raised to 45 (I am not sure of the amounts since I didn’t take notes unfortunately but I got check raised.)
I eventually found a fold (I only saw him raise with a straight and a set earlier) and he showed an 8. My question is: Was my play profitable in the long run?

    Thank you.

This is a villain dependent fold here. I’m probably calling one more street here, but if this villain is only ever raising super strong hands here I don’t hate the fold. You really have to ask yourself – if you call here, are you calling turn and river if you don’t improve?

You just have to be sure that the villain is never doing this with a hand like J9 or 97, AT, KT, etc. If you’re sure he’s only raising with an 8 I think the play is fine, just know that it is somewhat exploitable if you are folding to every raise, so make sure you have a good reason to fold.

Yeah, this is the part I’m a bit scared of. That’s why I was avoiding one really loose agressive player at the table (It was really fishy so still really profitable) since I tend to play a really ABC T-AG style. It’s the next step in my learning process, to polarize my bets range and learn to play against this type of player. Thank you for the feedback!

Aggression in the early streets and what they mean, is player dependent. The board is somewhat coordinated, so villain could be on a straight draw and using the 88 to realize fold equity. I don’t see weak opponents making this play though, so you’ll have to know who is capable of this play.

No, folding top pair top kicker is not a winning play every time you face a check/raise.
This is an exploitative fold as you said. I agree with you and Han.

Good players would check/raise with various hands (QJ, Q9, JT, J9, ,J7, 97, and 96). They would be balanced in this spot.
You made the correct fold this time because you think this villain is unlikely to check/raise draws.
Since you’re picking up on his tendency post flop, you should also have picked up on his lite open in early position. Many of the combos that have an 8 should fold pre to a 3-bet. So we also learn that this villain is opening lite and we should exploitativly 3-bet him lite 😉
