Hey guys so I just finished playing a 1/2 session here in Albuquerque,NM and I’ve been getting completely crushed lately. This was my first session back from taking 3 weeks off to just try and recharge my luck and try and refresh my mind of how I should be playing. Well tonight didn’t seem to go any different and this hand really bothered me.
So a little background on the table was I had been playing for about 2hrs with the same group for the most part and everyone was pretty passive and playing pretty true except one guy whose range was basically any two cards and he would pay people off almost every time. So I’m sitting in the small blind $270 effective) and the loose villian($182 effective) is sitting UTG. In this particular hand he UTG Straddled for $5, which made me first to act. I look down at A,Q Suited(clubs). Knowing how this guy plays every time he straddles he ends up raising no matte what he has. So I decided to just call the $5 straddle. BB folds and villain raises to $25. It folds all the way around to the button$260 effective) who cold calls. Instead of raising I just smooth call to see the flop. The flop comes pretty favorable or so it seems with Q,9,2 rainbow. Trying to pot control a little bit I decide to lead out for $40, which is just over half pot. Villain 1 (initial raiser) thinks and then jams all in for another $157, which he would jam all the time with just a top pair and nothing else. Pot is now $232. Button shrugs and reluctantly says call. So now pot is $389. Here is where I was stumped. I pondered for a bit and knew the guy on the button couldn’t have any better then what I had due to the way he had been playing and just shrugging. I figured with top pair top kicker I should be good most of the time and at this point I was getting more then 3 to 1 on a call. So I called and the turn came a 10c. So now I had top pair top kicker and a back door flush draw cause the 9 and 10 were of clubs. So I just went all in for my last $70 and the button called and the river bricked a 5 of spades. Turns out villain 1 had pocket kings in the straddle and villain 2 had A,Q off like I had suspected.
So my question is did I play this completely wrong? Should I have 3 bet preflop to see where I was at with the A,Qsuited or could I have found a fold on the flop? I had both guys covered to begin with, but I just don’t know what I should have done in this spot. Thanks

Everyone folded to the Button who raised to $12. I just smooth called with my A,Qsuited and the BB folded and the UTG straddler raised to $25. Then button called and I called. The rest is the same with me leading after the flop with UTG raising ALL-in and us both calling. So is there anything else I could have done different or found a fold after the flop or pre-flop?

On the flop, after UTG raises all-in over your bet and gets called by button, I suppose it’s possible to find a fold but it’s not easy. Hard to feel like you’re good against both players here. Sure, one player could have KQ and one could have JT for the straight draw, but I think that’s somewhat unlikely. One player could have a set or two pair, and there’s a decent chance someone else has AQ and you’re chopping at best.

I would think that if everyone limps to you and he has history to raise his straddle you shouldn’t take advantage by limp calling. You should be punishing his range or just raising yourself. I prefer if you just raise yourself and decide if he spazzes out.
Then flop I would be in check call mode leading into him allows him to fold if he has worse sometimes. And pot controlling would not be to lead. I think you are getting some terms mixed up. Let him continue to barrel all bluffs and weaker hands. You would likely see him lead and the button call. You can decide to squeeze or just check call. When you turn more outs I would say continue to let him barrel. I would likely check call. Then check decide rivers unless you get there and he has shown to check back.
So I dont like the lead or the limp call. You should be trying to pile money in there if like you said he pays off even with weak hands

You implied you were first to act before the flop so you couldn’t have been in the SB, right? Also what was the EFFECTIVE stack? The effective stack is the smallest stack size involved in the hand. So you can’t have one player with a 280 effective stack and another player with a 140 effective stack and another player with a 300 effective stack etc. To avoid confusion, simply note the size of the one effective stack. Also, you should be checking your entire range from out of position in a raised pot, or you will generally find yourself only getting action from hands which are better than yours. Additionally, you fold out hands that might potentially have bluffed. So if your opponent has a hand like, KJ, you could check to him and let him bluff into you whereas if you bet he just folds and you win a smaller pot. Perceptive players will also sometimes bluff-raise you with those types of hands too. And I would suggest betting either for value (trying to get a worse hand to call) or as a bluff (trying to get a better hand to fold). Betting or raising just to “see where I’m” is a good way to lose money that you didn’t need to lose.
Sorry for the long response. Hoped this helped!
