Taking a vacation and headed to Vegas on Jan 3rd until the 8th (mainly to celebrate my bday on the 7th). I’ve spent ample time searching on google, but I’d like to directly ask people with real experience. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to go as far as poker is concerned.
I’m a rec player, primarily stick to 1-2NL and hit some tournaments here and there. To realistically evaluate my play, I’m a decent player that makes the occasional dumb decisions, like not raising in great spots and making calls when I’m pretty sure I’m beat but I can’t bring myself to lay the hand down. But on the other hand I have moments of great play, like calling down or check raising with the nuts. More often than not I’ll fold preflop until I catch a premium hand unless I’m a blind. Overall poker is more about enjoyment from playing for me than a means to make money. That’s not to say that I don’t try to walk off with more than I sit down with or don’t take the game seriously, but the social aspect draws me to the game more than the opportunity to increase my chip stack. I guess I’m looking for where to go to find more laid back games where I can have a few drinks, make good conversation, and just have fun. Any suggestions on where to
go? On that note, any suggestions on where to avoid? Also, I’ve noticed on Bravo that a few places offer a 1-2 PLO game (Wynn, Aria, etc…). Can anyone say anything about these games? I’ve wanted to try PLO for a while now but 5-5 games usually require a much bigger bankroll than I care to sit down with. I’ve seen that Harrah’s even has a 1-1 PLO but haven’t noticed a game running yet. Is this actually a decent way for people to play with a lower bankroll or something where sharks are gonna be taking money from beginners?

From what you’ve described, any poker room would probably be a good match for you. If you’re not having fun or the game is not what you want, switch tables and then casinos if necessary. Aria, Bellagio and Wynn are all popular and their environment is better IMO but competition can be tougher there (which is good and bad). At the $1-2/1-3 level be prepared for some wide open play. You will have locals, tourists, pros and those who have never sat at a table before, try to use your skills and not focus on the outcomes.
The daily tournament at Aria is a favorite of mine. Seems to have decent players for the buy in amount.
Can’t comment on the Omaha games.
I’ll be in Vegas about that same time frame (Jan 4 through 7) to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Maybe I will see you there.

Pretty much every poker room is great, especially for 1/2,2/5 just make sure to get there before lunch so you don’t have to wait like crazy on the list. The great thing is if you’re having a not so great session you can walk like 5 mins to another great room and build that stack. Go with your gut on the table and poker room and have a blast, remember you’re there to have fun and take peoples money. Have a blast homie!

Obviously you will want to hit up Aria, Bellagio and Wynn for the “experience” and to say you have played there though. I might get slapped for saying this but if you want an easily beatable 1/2 game then go to the luxurious Excalibur.

The reason for this advice is that poker rooms with promotional bonuses attract many regs and pros who search for and follow such promotions. Elsewhere, you can play with more tourists and recreational players!
