Hey!
I’m a Rec player. I used to be an online low stakes (0.50/1$ – 1/2$) regular when I was living in NJ. After moving to MI, I started going back to live poker at the casinos in downtown Detroit and Windsor, Canada. I mostly play deep stack 1-2$ (300-600bb) that is usually double straddled. I play 2-5$ occasionally, mostly on weekends. I travel for tournaments whenever I can. My win rate is at 7bb/hour playing an average of 18 hours/week since the start of the year. The goal is to push it up to 10bb/hour within the next 4 months.
I joined this forum in hopes that I can improve my live poker skills on many levels by interacting with other players and reading different opinions.
Goodluck to y’ll
Yazzie.

I live in Toledo, but play in Detroit a fair amount also, given the proximity. What is your favorite D casino? I have played the majority of my time @ Greektown because I like the area and the ‘vibe’ – but I have heard a lot of people saying Motor City has the best action. Ever come down to Hollywood in Toledo? Decent games on the weekends – but with 4 casinos so close to you, I am not sure I’d ever come this way. Too many options in the Detroit Metro.
I played at Caesars Windsor a couple times this year – soft games but pretty low action in my experience. Saturday night you can mop up the 19-year-olds and their ‘sitting with $60’ stacks.. but it’s pretty swingy. Do you have the same experience there? I average slightly higher returns there, but you have a lot of all-ins pre-flop on those short stacks you have to dodge.

I just saw your reply.
I play at GreekTown a lot. It’s usually 1/2 but with a lot of action because almost everybody is playing deep stack +300bb (they allow you to match stacks). The players pool at GreekTown is definitely better than any other casino in the area. I personally prefer playing against good players who have somewhat good understanding of ranges, 3-bets, and other advanced poker concepts. They have the high hand promotion now though, so everyone is just slow playing their big hands 😀 which you can exploit, but be careful! i’ve been there man.
MotorCity has a crazy high bad beat jackpot I think it’s over 800k now. A lot of people who can’t even spell poker are playing there. You can grind the 1/2 there pretty easily. They are two problems though; 1. The max buy-in is only $200 which doesn’t allow you to pull off any moves against other players with bigger stacks early on in the session, so your only option is to play small pots while waiting for the nuts. 2. The players are mostly bad, dangerously bad. Meaning that they will win because you’re making too good of a play for them to understand its implication. So you gonna wanna adjust your bluffing rate when you’re there for the 1/2. Just play exploitative, bad players do the same mistakes all the time. They would not mix it up enough & they almost always have betting tells.
The 2/5 at MC is pretty lively, for a guy from outta town, you’d be getting lots of action. The regs are not even that good & they’re making lots of money. There’re a handful of pros though that you should be playing your A game against.I only play 2/5 PLO at MGM . The action is fantastic over the weekend. I haven’t been there lately though.
The action in Windsor is adequate I think. I go there when I want to change the scenery. The kids over there are horrible haha. I know whatcha talkin’ about man.
Never been to Toledo. I thought about showing up for a tournament over there a few months ago, but it never happened.

I totally agree that the $200 cap at the 1/2 NL table does make it tough to have a short session – you’re right. Most of the people at any given table are between $100-300 and so you have to really grind your stack up to get any big wins. I will tell you that Hollywood isn’t SUPER strict on this – the dealers especially – so if you sit with $225 or $250, you can usually get away with it unless another player says something. I usually sit with $220 (2 rows of $5s and 1 row of $1s) and I very rarely (maybe 1 in 10) get called out by another player. Everyone should want more money on the table – I am not sure why the casinos cap it so low. You’d think bigger stacks = bigger pots and bigger pots = more rake… ??
I have heard that about MotorCity – but I think it’s pretty true wherever you play 1/2NL. You have to play pretty tight when grinding the 1/2NL, and a bluff is basically a donation, cause someone is chasing you to showdown every hand. I did see that the Bad Beat is something wacky – I can’t even believe that it is at $800k. That’s crazy. I think Hollywoods is like $50k, but they also have a mini-bad-beat jackpot that is 10% of the main that I think hits fairly regularly. I play 2/5NL very rarely anymore, I can’t stomach the swings like I used to. I like getting in for $200-220, and hit the bricks around $500.
Toledo is a good time – on a Friday/Saturday night if you want to to put in a 6-8 hour session from like 7p-3a, you can make some great money! Plenty of loose action.
09/19/2017 at 2:16 pm #1492YazzieParticipantYes. If the highest stack on the table has $1500 for example, you can buy-in up to that number. The regular cap on the 1/2 is $300. So if the table just opened, you can only buy in for $300
– $839k now and going up. People are treating it like a lottery.

11/03/2017 at 9:26 am #1735Eric KeydelParticipantHey guys!
Currently live in Midland, TX but used to live just outside of Detroit! Motor City is definitely the most action with a wait list on just about every game. Talk about going from multiple casinos to the desert out here. I’ll hit y’all up if I’m around town!
11/03/2017 at 12:10 pm #1739Ian McClellanParticipantHey Eric – Welcome to the forum! Hope you enjoy Texas – were you a Motor City guy when you were here in the Detroit area?
11/07/2017 at 11:55 am #1789Eric KeydelParticipantMostly MGM, but when the games got good I’d out to the Motor city. Now Motor city is the place to be when I visit. Ever since that bad beat got really high, there is always a lot of action that you definitely want on all games.
