Hey everyone, I’m hoping to get some suggestions here on how to start out in my poker career. I’m using career lightly, I don’t see myself doing this professionally but I would like to play more than I do now. Currently I play $20 buy in games every couple of months. I’ve been studying a lot lately from watching Brad’s vlogs, and reading various articles and entries on the forum. Ive never played live at a casino and I would really like to start. I recently found out my local casino has low stakes tournaments weekly. Would this be a good start for me? If not could I get some suggestions?

Where abouts are you located? Most nightly tournaments I see are fast-moving structures that become shove fests pretty early. You can still gain plenty of valuable experience playing in them though.

I’m in Peoria, Illinois. We only have the one casino and I was kind of thinking that getting into a tournament, because I’ll know how much I’m losing off the bat. I’m used to playing a slow game, is there anything I should look out for or work on before getting into a fast paced tournament?

I would just try to enjoy the experience! Try to be selective and choose the strength of the hands you play according to your position relative to the button. ie. don’t enter a pot in early position with a weak holding. also keep your eye on the blind levels relative to your stack size, if you only have 10-12 big blinds in your stack then pick 2 cards and shove, don’t limp or raise/fold if you find yourself short stacked.

Yes. Once I get down to 15BB, I’m going all in whenever I enter a pot. Remember that it takes a much stronger hand to call an all in rather than shoving due to fold equity. Also remember that your chips become more valuable the fewer you have.

Small buy-in tournaments will generally be filled with casual players so don’t be afraid to just enjoy yourself too!
