Hello all,
I have started playing poker for the first time 3 weeks ago.
I started playing on playstation and got sucked into the most amazing game I never thought I’d enjoy. Since then let’s just say my girlfriend is not super pleased. I play every night online and went to the casino for the first time two weeks ago. The first night I bought in for 100 at a 1/2 game. I lost all of it but played for an hour and a half.
The second night I bought in for 80 and only lasted an hour.
So I analyzed my game practicing my opening hand ranges, studying more about position and reading some good ole poker books from half priced books.
So last week I buy in for 50 at the same 1/2 table. I last for 2 and a half hours!! Off 50 bucks.. I lost it all.. but still that’s the longest I made it with the smallest amount bought in for.. I’m still studying and reading. I have ran across Brad Owen on YouTube since studying and and found this forum. If anyone has any pointers or info to help my game that would be awesome..
Can anyone give me some things that beginners always screw up on or rookie moves to avoid.. anyways.. have a good weekend.11/19/2018 at 6:51 am #3431EnriqueParticipantHello Matthew!
I can share my personal experience. Well I’ll make it short. Hahah
I lost a lot of money when I started playing like most of us here, but to answer your question all I can say is don’t get married to any hand. It took me quite a while to be able to fold pocket KK and even AA. Although pocket rockets is hard to let go of even today. Watch your posture and tells in live games. Try and analyze what you did and how you could have done better.
That’s all I have for now. Hope it helps. Cheers and
Good luck!11/20/2018 at 12:31 pm #3434MatthewParticipantThanks Enrique,,
So to follow up I played my first tournament this past Sunday. Clearwater invitational up in the Washington state peninsula. It started out with four tables. I finished on the last 2 tables with 7 left..
I stayed disciplined for a beginner playing only good hands in relation to my position and what action was happening around me. Super pumped and for playing for one month super proud of myself.. take care all11/24/2018 at 7:24 pm #3443David WibelParticipantMatthew, I know it’s been a while since this thread was posted but I wanted to offer a few things.
1) Poker skills, be patient. It is a really long time to be comfortable in poker. I started a little over a year ago and I am still finding my place. Focus on playing solid poker, understanding some of the basic math such as implied odds and direct odds. Understand the why of strategies rather than just the what. Also remember that Aces get beat pretty often. 1/5 happens a lot more frequently than you might think, even 5% happens pretty frequently.
2) Personal life: I noticed your comment about your girlfriend not being pleased. You need to deal with that fast, and not necessarily in a force her to accept it way. If you really want to stay with that girl and playing poker is something you want to try sit down with her and talk about it. Otherwise this could end your relationship. Poker, especially casino poker is a really expensive hobby, with monthly costs easily exceeding $600 even on a 2-3 times a month basis.
