    Hey everyone!

I’m a husband, father, and poker fanatic from the Atlanta area. Known how to play since childhood, but only really got into the game about 8 months ago and it’s quickly become an obsession. Reading, watching, and listening to everything I can get my hands on. Gambling is illegal here, however, so all I have access to are freeroll bar tournaments, which are terrible. As much as I love the game and dream of being a pro player, it’s fairly pointless. Seeing as how I can’t uproot my family, and don’t have the time or ability to travel to casinos and grind it out for a living. Also in a tough spot because I just can’t stand online poker. I just love the feel of live games.

But i’ll still hold on to my dreams, learn as much as I can, and destroy these old drunks at the bars.

    Hey Zander,

Why don’t you try set up a home cash game. Build your bankroll and use it to fly somewhere for the weekend and hopefully crush it!!

    Best of luck

    Zander,
I learned to play in Colorado and there were lots of things that made games illegal there. My license to practice would be yanked if I had gambling conviction, so I had to be very cautious. We put together home games that were legal, meaning 1) all money collected had to go back to players (none to house or even a charity), 2) the house (bar or restaurant) couldn’t make money off the game by increased sales, 3) the players had to have a relationship outside of poker (couldn’t just be a poker group. My games were a bunch of my clients.). It was tough, but there were enough games that I could generally play two or three times a week. The cops weren’t interested in busting friendly little games. So if there are local bingo games, then there are probably ways to tiptoe into home games. Worth a look!

Thanks for the ideas guys! I had toyed with the idea of setting up a home game, but the wife and I are in the process of moving so I’ll have to put that in the works after we settle in. Probably going to end up being my best option though. I appreciate the tips!

    Hey Zander,

I’m in the Atlanta area myself (Commerce if you’re familiar, about 45 mins out of ATL on 85N) and feel the struggle. I make a trip to Cherokee NC 2 or 3 times a month. The 1/2NL game is decent, the 2/5NL game is ridiculous and even though you can buy in for as little as $200, I wouldn’t recommend sitting down at that table for less than $2000. Tournaments are decent as well, the smallest I can recall was around 35 people and that was on a Wednesday night. It’s a good time if you can make the trip. Granted, I’m single with no children so it’s easy for me to head there whenever I feel like. I have to imagine being married with children makes it much harder to do that.

Oh yeah I know Commerce, I live in the Lawrenceville area in Gwinnett. Planning on going to Cherokee for the first time early next year probably. Thanks for the tips. Do you stay on property, or do you have somewhere you recommend?

Vinings resident here! I’m with you on the internet poker games, cannot stand them either! It’s too easy first of all to get distracted and make terrible plays.

I’ve played quite a few live games here in Atlanta and a couple in Alabama but cant seem to find them anymore. Lost touch with a couple key people who knew where the games were.

I’d love to see if we can gather enough people through Off the Felt/friends who would be interested in getting together for a cash game somewhere around Atlanta.

    Let’s do this!
