Hi Everyone,
Really excited for a place to talk strategy and hand history with all types of players. Thanks to the Owen’s for setting it all up.
I’ve been playing since 2001-2002, mostly live $1/3 but a lot of on-line micro/mid between 04-09, always in a recreational capacity depending on what rooms I was close to. Never took my game past not going broke every session (pretty steady break even/small win player live) which was fine with me as I was averaging maybe 5-15hrs a week for fun.
Moved to South Dakota from Chicago (was playing mostly at the Horseshoe in Hammond, IN from 03-09) and closer to a small casino in IA. Played more like 10-20hrs of $1/2 a week there from 09-14 before relocating in Washington DC and 15min from MGM National Harbor. Now averaging around 10-15hrs a week (1-2 sessions) at $1/3.
Embarrassingly, through all those years I really never got any better than break even. I read books when I could and ran hot/cold on how much time I would really put in “Off the Felt” (had too sorry) thinking about and studying the game. In 2014 when relocating I found myself with a bit of extra time and close proximity to OK games and started reading a lot more, thinking about and working hands after sessions, and playing a lot more. Wouldn’t you know, suddenly I started winning bigger when I booked wins and losing at a slightly lesser rate as before and made some money. Nothing big, but solid extra income at something I love to do anyway. I have been on basically that track since. I study and look at as many hands as possible (some weeks 2hrs, some weeks 10hrs) and play as much as I can (average about 10hrs/wk live over the last 4ish years).
I feel like my game is pretty much stagnating recently, and I’m sure a lot is due to the gnarly $1/3 games that make it tough to really iron out strategy with my hours (as you have to get very lucky to sit in a really good game at the time you happen to be there, a lot of people buy-in super shallow and just push a ton, can make you good money if you catch but no strategy at all) but I feel pretty irresponsible playing even $2/5 without a proper and dedicated bankroll (I use my roll for life if I need to, tho I try not to if possible, life ya know).
Anyway, I don’t have many card playing friends, not that want to geek out on strategy and hand history at least, so I’m really looking forward to moving my game forward with some like minded people. Would love to move up stakes eventually, but I’m not looking to play unrealistically and have no intention of playing “professionally”. I have a job I love already, but poker has always been a passion and I do have a goal of playing “part-time” for real income in the next 18 months. To have any chance at that I know I need to interact with more players. I’m always open to talk low stakes strategy so feel free to hit me up if you need an outside opinion and I’ll do the same.
There are still fish in the sea, so let’s build a big ass net and catch them all!
