I am a regular online MTT player but from time to time i find my way into a casino to play some cash. In this hand the Main Villain had just sat down one orbit prior and had just won a large pot against Tilt Guy. Main Villain is a confirmed profitable semi-pro, Asian, middle aged, wears headphones, takes hand notes. He normally plays up but it is late at night and the only games going are 1-2 and we are playing 1-2 with a 5 dollar button straddle. Full table

    HERO IS HOLDING JJ
http://mysmp.me/h_kRa (THIS IS A LINK TO SHAREMYPAIR)

The hand: $580 Effective – Tilt Guy is short at $99
    PREFLOP
SB limp calls $5, BB limp calls $5, Main Villain raises to $52 UTG, Folds to Tilt Guy in MP1 calls $52, Folds to Hero in the HJ who looks down at JJ one diamond, Folds around and we see a flop.

THOUGHTS ON PREFLOP – When the villain raises to $52 from UTG I had a couple intimidate thoughts. First he raised the exact amount that if Tilt Guy jammed he could re-open the action. This made me believe that Villains range was 99+ AJs+ AQo+ and his plan was to isolate against Tilt Guy. When i look down at JJ my first thought is to 3bet but against a 10X open I had to pause. I think i have only two options with JJ. I can 3bet to $165 and fold to a jam or I can call and play the flop. In hindsight I think the correct play is to 3bet fold but in this scenario I opt to call in position which i believe is also a fine play.

    FLOP: 10d 7d 3c (POT SiZE $162)
Main Villain fairly quickly bets $115, Tilt Guy puts his last $47 in, Hero tanks for 90 seconds and calls. Villain now moves all in dark. yeah

THOUGHTS ON FLOP – Villains continue range on this board shouldn’t narrow. With this Cbet I think his range is still the same he can continue betting all his broadways and overpairs. Maybe at this point I am supposed to just let JJ go but i feel like that is weak. Most of the deck is still favorable for me and I feel like I can call on this board and on a safe turn get it in and cross my fingers. I did tank shortly preflop while considering 3 betting and i tanked on the flop while i considered my options. This almost certainly lead the villain to believe my range was capped. When villain moves in dark I think we have to narrow his range now to just AQd AKd and TT+. I tend to believe that this shove is likely being made by AA or KK with no diamond and AKd AQd. My gut instinct at the time was to snap throw a chip in but I am a thinking player so why wouldn’t I see the free card before I make the call.

TURN Ah (POT SIZE $439) + Opponents dark All-in approx $435
Main Villain already has moved All-in, I tank for a while and fold.

    THOUGHTS ON THE TURN
At this point an A is probably the worst card that could peel. I don’t see how I can continue now as I am drawing near dead to the range I have assigned the Villain. I think it is the right fold. Having said that it was my intent to call on any non diamond T or smaller. Is that bad?

    RIVER: 2s
Villain rolls over 99 and takes the sidepot Tilt guy rolls over T9 and scoops the main.

Conclusion: I really don’t feel that I played the hand poorly. I do feel that a 3bet fold strategy pre-flop may have been a great play. I am curious to hear any thoughts you all may have on this hand and how you would have played it. Thanks!

For a 1/2 game that is a very large pot.

This is a pretty sick spot. You could go either way preflop. 3bet with JJ in position would be okay, and likely to give you the betting lead. Even if the tilted villain jams, you’ll be playing for a side pot. From what I’m learning, there is little bluffing when playing for a side pot, because there is the main pot still contested for. But, I’ve been wrong before =)

As played, the preflop call is okay. Playing this deep, your basically set-mining given the odds. Continuing on the flop is pretty close. 24 combos of pocket pairs that have your range crushed, but you beat out any Ax and broadway holdings drawing to the flush. I think calling is find to see what develops on the turn….usually.

The blind-turn shove is crazy! It was a bad card for you and this maniac has handcuffed you to a decision. 200BB on just a pair. A fold is fine here, but I would definitely make note of this, as this guy seems like a maniac, shoving like that into the side pot.

I think you played the hand well.
