Preflop action, I’m BB and look at AA. We’re about 6 levels in. Villain 1 is in high jack and villain 2 is SB. HJ raises 3x blind and SB calls. I cold call. Flop comes Ah-2h-2d. HJ min raises, SB 3 bets, I shove at 10x blinds about 800. My image at the table is strong but I still had a more chips then several other stacks at the table. HJ tanks for 3 minutes before folding. SB calls to see the bad news. Did I overplay this? HJ is someone I’ve played with half a dozen times and he’s known to make loose calls against loaded boards like that. He said himself he was close to making the call but last second decided against it as there were no rebuys. My thought process was to overbet early and try to sweep up the pot, a method I had shown to have used before as I showed a bluff with a similar tactic a few hands before.

    Hi Naram,

You should definitely be 3-betting this hand preflop, then betting small (~30%) on the flop. As played you should definitely cold call the flop. You have a chance to keep the HJ in and don’t need to be making anyone fold.

    Thanks!

You can never go wrong raising pre-flop with AA, especially when more than one player has put money into the pot.

With this flop, I actually like a slow-play. You lock down so much of this board it’s hard to get value. There’s only one Ace left in the deck, so what else can you opponents have and still be able to call a bet? It sounds like you’re pretty short-stacked here, so it should be easy to get the money in by the river. As played, I think it’s best to check-call flop and turn, and lead-jam river if there is any money left.

It makes so much sense now. But in the moment, with these particular villains, I’ve seen them call much looser. Neither of them trusts people going all in after cold calling preflop. But apparently my table image got strong. If I could play the hand again, I’d definitely reraise the 3bet preflop and slow play to the river.
EDIT I really appreciate the comments though. It was what I thought I should do after the hand was finished, I wanted to confirm though. Old me would have been happy with the win. Trying to perfect my poker though and I realize I need to maximize my value hands.
