Well… it’s happened again. I am restarting my “bankroll”
Mainly it’s just the money I have set aside specifically for poker from my own savings and I assign a few specific rules to what I play and how I play. It is essentially the “bankroll challenges” people put up and in part it is to try and make me a better player.
Start with $1,700 (this was just the amount I saved up, nothing particular about this amount)
Buy in for no more than 10% of Bankroll
1. Exception for $150 in 2-100 and $200 in 2-200
2. No more than 20% of bankroll at risk at any one time
3. All money goes to bankroll
4. 2 Buy in stop loss limit
5. Play Tight pre-flop and tight-aggressive post (no wonky 3-bet bluffs, no 4 bet jam with AKs and position matters a lot)
6. No Tournaments (where I am the rake is ridiculous, about 20-25%)Arizona, my home state, has spread limit so my stack is a bit better safeguarded against all ins and it means buying in for less than full doesn’t hurt as much. I have when I can play in bigger games but for now I am confined to one casino (the other smallest is 3-300 unless I feel like playing limit which I may try, some 3-6 and 4-8 limit could be interesting change ups especially if I get on a downswing early.
I had my first session today, bought in for $160, out for $520. I had $320 and managed to get flush over flush on someone for most of their stack. If people care I will keep you posted (I only play once a week) but thought I would share a bit of my poker story.

I’m kind of in a similar spot, so that could be inspiring / motivating 🙂04/30/2019 at 6:55 pm #4133Matthew RParticipantI’m on the same “rebuild” grind. I’d like to follow and see how your doing.
05/02/2019 at 3:42 pm #4144Darryl McKenzieParticipantI’m looking to get back out there in a few months. Have enough to start 1/2 NL but also saving for 1/2 PLO game in Orange City,FL. Would like to play 2/5NL but 40k is needed to play comfortably full time. What is a sufficient bankroll to start playing part time for 1/2 NL?( Once a week)
05/04/2019 at 6:42 am #4148David WibelParticipantDarryl, it depends on how comfortable going broke you are. Something like 10-15 buyins ($2k-$3k) is a good start but it has a decent chance of going broke with just one moderate down swing. It may take 1-2 months of downswings but it can happen.
I noticed with your 2/5 bankroll you are looking at somewhere around 60 buyins (I’m not sure if you are using $500 or $1k buy in). To play 1-2 on occasion (1-2 times per week) I would say start with 15-25 buyins, $3k-$5k. This gives a decent ability to withstand downswings but isn’t a prohibitive starting cost.
My bankroll is fairly aggressive however I have a full time job so it’s not my only income. I can only play 1/2 and 2/2 until I have 13 buy ings for 2/3 and I only buy in for 100BB. At that point I will probably play 1/2 to 2/3 until I have 15 buy ins for 3/5 but drop down quickly if I have a losing session. If you want I can DM you full buy in structure and rules.

These are great notes. Playing in Florida means dealing with lots of loose players. Gonna start with 2k 1/2NL and grind out a bankroll.05/04/2019 at 4:36 pm #4151David WibelParticipantBest of luck. I just got done with my session and had a set back and this is how it goes.
In for $400 out for $0. Got coolered twice, mainly by people limping hands I wouldn’t have expected them to. My last two hands were A6s losing to AQo when AQ limped UTG+1 in a straddled pot. The knockout was when this player limped AA UTG+2 in a straddled pot, I shoved 77 and couldn’t improve.
This wipes out my winnings from last session and I have ~$1650 now. If I play next week I will buy in to 1/2 for $150 or 2/2 for $200 and leave when I get to $330.
05/06/2019 at 10:37 am #4156Darryl McKenzieParticipantOuch. Sorry to hear about those hands. Good luck on the recovery.
05/18/2019 at 8:46 pm #4179David WibelParticipantFor anyone who cares the bankroll is still alive. After another couple of sessions I am at $1990. I can just about buy in for $200 into 1-2 and 2-2. It’s been interesting. Preflop is a much simpler game now but post flop gets more difficult, especially as I continue to play with deeper stacks.
I’ve played a little bit of limit and I’ve lost both times I played, about $60 total. The main change I’ve noticed is that I am much more willing to fold hands that are good but I could be seriously behind. I had one today where I folded KQo on a Q high flop against an overbet by a 3-bettor pre (he raised to $25 over my $10. I and one other called, check to 3-bettor and he leads for $100)
05/19/2019 at 6:39 am #4181Brad OwenKeymasterGet them David. Good luck man.
06/08/2019 at 10:33 pm #4286David WibelParticipantI’m still continuing the grind and I’ve been having a lot of time to reflect on my mental states throughout the sessions. I only have about 40 hours played over 10 sessions so its not much. The losing sessions are the most interesting. I have found I am more frustrated by hands where I believe I misplayed, usually ones where I made a stupid call or didn’t make a call that upon reflection I feel I should make. I more get confused when people limp call with a really wide range. I had one gentleman today complain about AK never winning but he just kept limp calling AK from any position and kept losing because someone else made a pair and he didn’t.
Bank roll is now at $1840. I had my first back to back winning sessions to jump up from $1430 which is another anecdote. It is really hard to string together winning sessions, even with a relatively small walk out cap. It is so frequently just a couple of turn or river plays that make or break a session.
Best of luck to everyone continuing the grind.
