I’m on the button with AJ off and with a little under 300 behind. The opp has about ~$400 or more.
There’s a preflop raise to 15, and I call last to act.
FLOP: 7 8 10 rainbow
The opponent raises to 30 and I call just to see if I can improve on the turn
TURN: 7 8 10 9
He raises to 70 and I call. The river is a King and he checks. I make a bet of 100 and he goes all in. After tanking, I have a bad feeling he has JQ but I had to call to see. Unfortunately I was right. What could I have done better here? (I also just sat down no longer than 10 mins)

Anyway, with AJo I would have 3 bet this to $45-50 heads up (add one increment of $15 for each caller) with the intention of taking it down preflop. If this was AJs I can get behind a call OTB because I don’t mind trying to over-flush someone or hit two pair in a multiway pot.
As played I probably would have checked the river… there’s a four liner straight and you’re chopping or losing if called.

It’s true that you may not get called by many hands that are worse but that’s why it’s ok to bet small. You can even bet $50-70 to squeeze every dollar you can out of two pair, set, or smaller straight. It’s really unfortunate that he had the best possible hand and you had the second best possible hand. That’s the definition of a cooler.

If I made the second nuts with both hole cards I’m absolutely betting it/ probably felting. In this case I can get behind a bet/fold OTR but I would need to be against a real fish or have history with the villain where I look “bluffy.”
01/04/2018 at 6:22 am #2181Brad OwenKeymasterYeah, there’s certainly a difference between using one card and both cards but when we check back river I think we’re tossing money away. I’m not sure how many times I’ve had the second nuts with a one card straight, it got checked to me, and I checked back. I would argue for a bet/fold on the river but there’s not that much money left. In this instance we’re getting 6.5:1 on a call. If we bet smaller we’d still be getting around 5:1.
