Hi there !
So I was playing a small tournament online yesterday. The level isn’t really high in terms of skills, but sometimes you find yourself in tough spots and you play against smart players.
Here’s the spot :We’re all pretty deep in this hand (60+BB)
UTG opens for 2,2 BBs if I remember correctly. The table is passive, I’m on his left so in position with A6 suited in clubs, I decide to call. Button calls as well, both blinds fold. Can you dream of a better flop here ? _2c_Ah_Ad_ and we flop TRIPS, with a backdoor nutflush draw.
UTG checks. Having an ace I guess it is unlikely that both of them will be interested in this flop, so I decide to check too. BTN leads 3.5BB into a pot of 7. UTG folds and I make the call but I’m kind of intrigued, maybe worried that he would have a better Ace.Heads up to the turn card, which is nice for us : the 10 of clubs. We’ve improved our backdoor flush draw. I check it to the BTN, who checks back. At this point I’m thinking that he had air on the flop, and decided to bet it only because the PFR and I checked it, and because he was in position.
The river card makes me think the Poker Gods liked me yesterday night. Trips on the flop, nut flush on the river thanks to the 9 of clubs.
Time to get some chips here, I decide to size a bet of 6BB (the pot is 14), not too big because I wouldn’t want his Aces to hero fold here. (even if him having an ace makes little sense since he checked back that turn with a flush draw on the board). And to my suprise, he raises me. Almost a click back, he makes it 14BBs. Reflexion time. One combo of A9 suited, same for AT suited. A2 suited is too unlikely after an utg raise and a call. Could he have been tricky with pocket 2’s or pocket T’s and checked back that turn ? Did he bet 9’s on the flop for protection / info and got there on the river ? Last goofy option, would he raise a King high flush ? (possible, you never know at this stakes ^^)I eventually make the call, knowing that I’m beat… He shows 9’s full and got lucky on the river. What do you think of the way I played the hand ? And do you always lay down your nut flush here ? Thanks !
