    $1-2 NLH
    AKo in SB ($350 stack)

    4 limpers, I open for $20.

UTG 3bets to $80. Seems like he’s been trying to get into a lot of pots with me. Usually calling my opens; no 3bets.

Given his limp-raise I put him on AA-KK-QQ.

    Everyone else folds, I call.

Flop comes A78 (two diamonds) – I have no diamonds.

UTG has $120 behind. I eye his stack and put him all-in. He folds and shows KK.

Post-hand questions I had for myself:

    1) Should I have put him all-in pre-flop?

    2) Should I have checked the flop?

    Thoughts?

    Thanks!

I’ll never understand the limp/3-bet strategy. It’s just horrible, but it is still happening every now and then in 1/2, 1/3 and 2/5.

The action, had he opened, would’ve been you 3-betting and sticking it in pre if he 4-bets or on ALMOST ANY flop since you’re blocking AA and KK.

    1) I don’t think 4-betting with AK is a good play here since he announced his hand with the 3-bet. You’re bluffing if you do so. Therefore realizing your equity is the route that I think is better.

    2) If you check the flop you have to check the turn as well and possibly check the river. You want to rep a hand that he beats and you want to send the message that you hate the Ace there and you don’t have a diamond draw since the Ace of diamond is on the board (I assume). You’re not worried about him having a diamond draw ’cause according to your read, he’d only limp/3-bet with big hands. So you wanna rep 9s 10s Js Qs.

On another note, I personally tighten up my preflop range against players who I think are targeting me and I stick to the top 7% of my range (that is AJ suited and 9s+) especially outta position. If someone is trying to play pots against you, make sure you’re balanced with your check and bets and you will get paid my friend. They are actually doing you favor.

    Cheers Yazzie, sage advice.

Yeah, the limp 3-bet is basically announcing one of only a couple of possible hands. Should have taken that knowledge and checked it down to the flop and maybe would have got paid.

I’m not sure balance is that important in a 1-2 game.. but I don’t think there are any other hands that you would donk with in this spot. So i think the GTO approach would be to check the flop and fire on all turns.. even if the turn is a diamond the pre flop action basically guarantees that there is only AKd (one combo) in his range where as your range might be wide enough to have KQd. Only way you can make money in this spot is if you let your opponent catch up… and checking the turn would keep your range wide and allow him to feel like he caught up on many turns.
