Forgive me on the details, this hand happened back in May. It kinda bugs me so I’ll ask. 1/2 no limit. $425 in front of me. I’m in early position, I think big blind bc there were some limpers and I made it 20 to go with QQ. Small blind is only caller. Approximately $50 in pot. Flop comes 87(5 I think. Not positive but I know it was less than the 87 and not at six. Lol sorry) Anyway checks to me and I bet $25 thinking it will take it down. We are sitting either side of dealer. Villain leans up and says how much do you have? I look at my stack and as I’m saying about say $425 the 3 seat blurts “He’s got you covered.” He had a little over $300. Bought in for 3 and won a small pot. Probably about $325. He proceeds to say “Oh” kinda sheepishly like and then says “Well I’ll raise to $125.” I tank for about 15 seconds and fold.
Reasoning, Possible flopped straight but I doubt he’d raise on the flop. I’m thinking set or 2 pair afraid of the straight draw.
His reaction to my stack size and subsequent action made me think that know way is this a bluff and whatever he had he was willing to go with it.
I fold saying to myself there will be better spots. I’m perfectly fine with my fold based on my reads. I was just feeling like it was a nitty fold. Now that I’ve typed it out and put things in words I’m still fine with my lay down. Even more so.Well what do you guys think?

From the sizing, a good player will do this with a vulnerable 2 pair but I would exclude a flopped straight in his range unless there is a FD on the flop. He may raise a straight here but it will likely be much smaller in $. I would make the same assumption about a set. You will see recreational players check/jamming here at small stakes because they don’t want to feel the pain of a 2 outer but those are usually easy to spot. An advanced player might make this move with 86 but it is a bit optimistic. Based on his sizing, I would narrow his range to 2 pairs and pair plus SD which has QQ crushed. It seems like a pretty easy laydown IMO.

The only thing to consider is that, while this play is representing 2-pair or better, some weak players in low stakes games will check/raise a pair like 99-JJ on a flop like this. They are over-repping their hand when they do this (whether they know it or not), but I don’t think they’re trying to get a hand like QQ-AA to fold. They’re trying to fold out hands like AK/AQ/AJ and get value from hands that flopped top pair. Whether a particular player would make the play I describe is something you just have to learn from experience. So as a default in a 1/2 game, I would just fold here.

Plus if he’s a thinking player, he might know that, since you raise from ep, your range must be strong (mainly over pairs and overcards to that board)
