Playing $650 tournament. Blinds 800/400/100. I have 35k and villian has around 90k. I open from utg+2 with AsKc at 2100. He calls from cutoff. Flop is 2h,6d,7d. I continue with a bet of 2300. He calls. Turn is 3s. We both check. River is 10c. I check and he bets 10k. I take about 3 minutes before I end up calling. I took the bet as a massive missed flush draw. Ends up he had complete air with QhJh. It was the right call in the moment with a situation where I thought it just made sense he had more bluffs than any kind of value.

Question being. How would y’all have played this? Was I an idiot for calling this even tho I was right? The one thing I thought I probably should have done different was fire a 2nd bullet after the turn. What are y’alls thoughts?

David I believe if you fire a second bullet after the turn and he calls then you check the river and he bet the 10k, you will have to fold. By him checking the turn showed weakness. I think you played well!

Very tough situation and agree you played it well. A lot of these situations is player history and gut feel. I guess you are only fearing that he called with A-x suited, small pair or possibly caught the river with easily J-10, Q-10, K-10, A-10… maybe even suited 9-10 or 8-10. So I could argue there’s a lot of ways to lose. Which is why gut feel there and player style is relevant.
If you continued on the turn… likely he would fold… he doesn’t beat anything. But if he’s the type of player that thinks he has 6 outs and will try to make that hit… then you check the river and he bets even larger where you cant call. I think you played it just fine and sounds like a nice read.
