Curious how everyone made the transition from $1-$2 to $2-$5 and higher games. Feel like I’m at that point, consider myself half ass successful at $1-$2 and $1-$3 games. Curious at the level of play at higher stakes. Same level of player, just with more money perhaps?
Thanks.

06/23/2017 at 9:43 am #475LookParticipantHey,
Game selection game selection and again I will stress game selection. At the end of the day 2-5 is just a donkfest like 1-2 or 1-3 only difference is the donks have more money at 2-5 or more money they willing to lose. For sure you will bump into more grinders but overall 2-5 is just as soft.
good luck with your transition. i am a 1-3 player and do take the occasional 2-5 shot when i see a yummy game full of Nemos.

Also just keep an eye on the games and look for tables that you think you can play well against.
06/23/2017 at 3:05 pm #508Brad OwenKeymasterI agree with what people have said above. Game selection and bankroll are very important. There seem to be a lot of people who think you can only play one stake. If you see a bigger game that you believe you’d be a favorite in and you have the bankroll then you should take a shot every once in awhile. If for some reason you feel outmatched or uncomfortable then just go back down to 1/2 or 1/3. Even if you are a little uncomfortable or a little outmatched, it’s ok to play in bigger games for the sake of trying to improve. Look at what the winning players are doing in that game and compare it to how you play. Chances are you can learn some valuable skills by just playing tight and observing others. The fact that you’re on here interacting, looking for advice, and trying to improve makes me think that you’re probably at least as good as the avg 2/5 player since most people in those games aren’t great players and don’t really have an interest in trying to get better. I suggest you try it out. You don’t need to put in marathon sessions or anything. Just play for an hour or two at first and see how you do. Good luck and keep us updated on how it goes.
06/23/2017 at 7:40 pm #521Don, completely unremarkable and commonParticipantI think it has a lot to do with bank roll to survive variance. I’m not a full time player, but when I go I take 3 buy ins. So if you can fund 3 buy ins, go for it! Let us know how it goes.
Cheers!
06/23/2017 at 9:43 pm #535BrentParticipantThanks for the feedback guys, confirmed my suspicions about the bigger games. I think I’ll give it a try Saturday. You guys are going to cover my losses if it goes bad, right? LOL
06/23/2017 at 9:55 pm #537LandonParticipantFor those stressing game selection, what specifically do you look for when you’re eyeing a game?
06/23/2017 at 10:04 pm #538BrentParticipantLandon, I’m more on the conservative side, so I look for games that have a lot of chips flying. See a lot of the same faces in small city like St. Louis, so I don’t show up on Saturday morning to battle the grinders, I wait for Saturday night for the guys that only get out that one night a month, etc.
But what do I know? haha
06/24/2017 at 8:24 am #557Steven YoungParticipantFrom my experience a lot of 1-3 games play almost like a 2-5 game anyway. Standard raise 12-15 with plenty of 25+ opens etc. There is just more money on the table for most 2-5 games especially if the buy in is over 500. I don’t play live games too often. But I usually play 1-3 just due to bankroll.
06/24/2017 at 8:19 pm #575BrentParticipantWell, it didn’t happen tonight. Only game was $5/$10 no limit, no $2/$5 game. Next time.
Did win $367 in $1/$3 no limit. Won $500 last session. Running good. Maybe….if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. LOL
06/25/2017 at 12:44 am #579AndrewNeemeParticipantI definitely played the lowest stakes way too long before starting to move up. There’s an adjustment period for sure but like Brad said, there’s no reason that you can’t move back down, which you almost certainly will want to do if either the 2/5 game isn’t that great at some point, or the first effort doesn’t go well. But as others have said, 2/5 isn’t anything to be afraid of, as long as you can withstand a loss of a couple buyins and rebuild that at 1/3 or via a job. And yes Brad will cover your 2/5 losses, this is a very friendly forum.
06/25/2017 at 6:09 am #589Brad OwenKeymasterLol, thanks for making that clear Andrew.
06/25/2017 at 12:42 pm #600Steven YoungParticipantHey just lost 10k at 2-5. I’ll be in vegas in a couple weeks for my money Brad. K thanks. 🙂
