I with the rest of these guys, Bankroll and game selection is huge! I say just try it a few times and see what you think. The 1st time I moved up to 2/5 I was nervous as HELL thinking I was going to be playing with better poker players. I quickly found out that wasn’t true. Good luck Buddy

I’m a $2-3 player due to bankroll limitations, but if I build my stack up to $500+ in a game then I move to the $2-5 table. That way if I lose, I rationalise I only lost a $2-3 buy-in!

Played 4 handed with mandatory $10 straddle on the button a couple hours in waiting for must move seats. Old Brent, prior to discovering the poker vlogs and offtdefelt wouldn’t have played in such a game. 🙂 Game broke and played $1-$2 until getting moved to main $2-$5 game, but it was 4 handed soon after I moved there.
All in all, a pretty good experience. I played 6 hours of $2-$5 and got a $275 lesson. 🙂 Everyone’s comments were spot on, it’s pretty much the same game.
I struggled just a bit with adjusting with betting amounts and in hindsight played a bit too tight, but a good first experience.
Definitely glad I made the leap and plan to continue as $2-$5 being my first choice.
Thanks guys!

07/02/2017 at 10:16 pm #804Angelo FusconeParticipantFirst, I want to say HOLA. This is my introductory post. Thank U Brad for having me and look forward to many more with the fine young kids here. 😊
Okay, now about moving on up. Can’t differ with what the folks here said above. 2-5 is kind of an intermediate level and is worth the increase in hourly rate, “slightly” better chance to beat the house.
Again game selection is paramount. U do want a good mix of easy players. Playing like weekday mornings…not a good idea, 95% grinders and sharks.
I believe U need a balance of players for a good game. If too many rec loose players the variance is higher, too many sharks odds unfavorable.
Before U sit in a game, walk around and scope out the tables and get an inkling as to how it looks for U.07/03/2017 at 2:20 am #815TomParticipantBeing that someone referenced 5/10. I do want to point out an obvious fact. The move from 1/2 to 2/5 is not that big of a difference other than keeping bankroll management a priority. However the move from 2/5 to 5/10 is a giant step. The skill set in the average player and the reg/rec ratio jumps up substantially.
07/03/2017 at 7:33 am #822Steven C Anderson IIParticipantIm currently in the transition from 1/2 to 2/5. I have been playing 1/2 live for about 2 years and have been a consistently profitable player for the last year. I am not a pro by any means. I have a career but use poker as a secondary income. My bankroll is at $9276 after playing an average of 10 hours of poker per week.
I live in Iowa so games are not as frequent. 1/2 games happen at my local casino every evening except Monday and Wednesday which are the PLO and 2/5 night’s respectively.
My transition has been pretty straight forward since 2/5 is only offered once a week. I play 2/5 on Wednesdays, otherwise im playing 1/2.
Jumping over to the 2/5 game has been challenging. I have had a tough time playing my normal game and I feel like I’m psyching myself out by thinking these guys are so much better than me. Ive played maybe 5 sessions of 2/5 so far with more loss than profit; down $465 over my last 3 three sessions. My 1/2 game is making up for my losses but im still trying to figure out how to relax and play my normal game at the 2/5 table.
07/03/2017 at 11:02 am #824TomParticipant@sca31415 It looks like from your picture you play at Riverside and if that is the case your 2/5 sample size will always be small and inconsistent to the rest of the country. Unfortunately Riverside’s 2/5 games have been referred to as the toughest in the Midwest. The percentage of grinder to recreational player is insane there. I have a lot of respect for a lot of the regular players in those games. I grinded my teeth there for a while but have found other rooms to be far better 2/5 selection. Even Prairies game is ten times softer.

07/05/2017 at 3:02 pm #865joelParticipantAs others have said, many times the players at 2/5 gave no more skill at 1/2. It really depends on the lineup. I’ve been at super soft 2/5 tables in Vegas and at others where I knew I was the Mark. Aggressive game selection will make the transition much easier. Don’t stay in a tough game.
07/11/2017 at 12:27 am #950bku9ParticipantMy experience is different than what players have mentioned here. In Los Angeles, a lot of the $1/2 players are TERRIBLE while a lot of the $2/5 players are very seasoned. Doesn’t mean that you won’t find terrible $2/5 players, just that the players in general can be very different. Doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t move up either, just be clear to yourself on what you’re looking for in that game.
