5/5/10 Los Angeles, Effective Stack: 1100 My hand: A 10 clubs in late position. Three limpers, I raise to 100, straddle (Rec Player) calls with (X,X) everyone else folds… Flop comes Q K clubs with a 3 diamonds… I bet 100 and he calls relatively quickly… turn is a blank 5 of spades… I decide that on that board his range is capped at a pair because he would have raised on the flop… I barrel 225.. he calls within 10-15 seconds… now on the 10 spades river I decide on a 250 bet and within four or five seconds he raises about 600 more all in and I muck. After I asked if he had a full house and he looked at me, said he had the royal draw so I told him my hand and he says I had you. I see some merit to check calling the flop, but any warrant to playing a different line vs a rec player? Thanks for anyone who takes the time to reply.

Maybe him being a rec player it would be best to really tighten his range. If he was straddled at 10 then calling to 100 is big for him. you could have ginen him credit for AK AQ KK or QQ. I think it might depend how tight he was playing before and what he had behind him. Plus it looks like you were betting into him. I’m probably closer to a rec player and I could see being in his shoes. Maybe a check on the turn and let him dance first would have given you the info you needed.

    Cheers!

First off, I’m a bit confused about the hand. You said you asked if he had a full house but as I see it the board was KQ35T with two clubs on the flop. Perhaps there was a typo but I don’t see how he could have a boat. Also you say he had AT of clubs in late position but then you consider check/calling when he was in the straddle? Not sure how you’d be out of position. Button straddle?

I think betting the flop and turn as played is fine. You want to build a large pot so you can make big value bets when your combo draw hits. That being said, I think you should be checking back the river. Betting the river with AT on a KQ35T board doesn’t make much sense. You probably aren’t going to get him to fold many hands that are better than your 3rd pair. He might fold a queen, but it’s reasonable he could have AQ and stubbornly call you down (might not 3bet out of straddle over your very large open size). Also a hand like QT just got there for 2 pair. I would just check back and take your showdown value, mostly because it’s not clear if you’re bluffing or value betting. Do you want a call? If you are called you’re probably losing to a better pair. Do you want a fold? He isn’t going to fold top pair when the club draw misses and might call you down with some strong queens. Obviously you can’t come anywhere close to calling a raise – it’s not only unlikely your pair of tens is good but you also block so many flush draws that you’d want your opponent to be bluffing with. I think you’re really opening yourself up to getting check raised on the river and having to fold a hand that has some showdown value.

my bad it was a typo!!! It was a paired board with a Q spades on the river! I only had ace high so thats why I bet.. I represented the queen because I put him on K8 suited or a weak hand because he had raised pre with Js in a hand where he was crushed and flopped a boat vs Qs… I was just barreling off because he was in my opinion a weak player but a lot of what you said with the 10 being there. I felt that giving up didnt make much sense because it was a type of hand where I felt he would raise based on hand history. thanks for the advice man, appreciate it

Thank you sir, I agree except one thing is that this player would raise me because he is the straddle on the button.
