Playing 1-3 and cutoff who is a good player opens to 19, i call on the button with 9s8s and big blind calls as well. Flop is 9h8h4d. Bb Checks, cutoff c-bets 40 I call and bb Calls. Turn is the 9c so I make a full house. Action checks to me and I decide to check back. My thinking at the time was that the cutoff likely had a big ace or over pair as he was a tight solid player and wasn’t c betting often and was hoping to disguise my hand strength and get max value on river. River is the jack of spades. Bb checks, cutoff bets 100 and I tank a little then shove for about 250. Bb folds and cutoff snaps. He has JJ and hit his two outer… pretty gross. Any thoughts and/or advice on how I played the hand? Anything is appreciated! Thanks

Losing with a full house is never fun. I doubt it would have changed the outcome, but I would not have checked back on the turn. You may fold out worse hands, but I think you need to try to get three streets of value in this situation. Allowing a free river card is not a good idea imo. You will likely get called by flush draws and overpairs and you may get check/raised by something like A9. In this case I don’t think betting turn would have folded out JJ, so you were going to lose either way unfortunately. But in future I’d suggest betting turn for value when it’s checked to you in a spot like this.

I agree with Dave, I would have bet that turn and tried to get value from draws and over-pairs. It is always important to get value and build the pot, especially when three-handed. I too agree that unless you make a pot-sized bet that the JJ isn’t folding. Tough to stomach, but it’s important to focus on your decisions and not be too results oriented. It’s a cooler for sure… GL at the tables!

I agree with both Dave and Matt, but I’ll take it a step further, I think you should have raised the flop as well. Top two, while nice, is vulnerable especially against two opponents. You’ll most likely get called by strong draws and over pairs, but you’ll be getting more money into the pot while you are in all likelihood ahead.
