Hi all. New and love the concept of this site. I’m by no means a great player but am eager to learn.
Playing a 2-5 NL game. Buy ins are capped at 600 and I have a starting stack of around 2k starting. I’ve got the button and Utg+1 opens for 35 with a similar starting stack as myself. Folds to me where I look at AdAc. I raise it up to 110 and it folds to the original raiser who calls. Flop comes Qs10d4s. He checks and I bet 130. He calls. Turn is an off suit 4. This time he leads out for 200. I make the call after thinking for a bit. I wondered if he had a spade draw with check, call, bet. Next card is an off suit Q. He leads out again for 400. Definitely not an ideal card but he’s missed any flush and straight draws. Since I didn’t have the As, I figured it was probable he had that one with maybe a Js or 10s. However, several hands earlier he took a similar line with pockets kings. Called a raise after being the initial raiser and then checked, called, bet, and bet. That hand he scooped with a set of kings. I’ve got that running through my mind but I make the call anyways and take down the pot and he shows a js,10s bluff. As I’m stacking my chips, several players around the table start talking about how that was a bad call on my part. One of them even said, “Well you won that pot but that’s a bad call.” So my question is simple, was it really that bad and why? I can’t convince myself it was a bad call but am open to hearing ya’lls opinions.

As for the river, I’m not sure; that’s a tough call. He could have AQ or KQ, but is he going to lead turn and river with those hands? I guess that’s the real question – what hands does he lead turn and lead river with? I suppose that answer is player dependent. QT probably raises, maybe on the flop. AQ maybe, but I’m not so sure KQ or JQ does. That leaves KJ (with and without the flush draw), and pair plus flush draws, and the flush draws. I suppose there are more hands that you are ahead of than those you lose to, but still a tough call. Against a nitty player I think this is a fold, but against someone who is capable of the bluff I think this call is profitable.

I guess being a forum setting here it’s hard to demonstrate the intangibles that are going on at the tables. That being said, the player was not a nit by any means which I guess lends to this being a better call than not. Thanks for the input John.
