In general you have to trust your gut. A lot of times that is your subconscious trying to tell you something you have picked up, but maybe you aren’t aware of. I know it is hard to fold the big draws but if your gut is screaming and you think your opponent could have the nuts listen. I fold a lot of decent hands in cash games. I have likely lost out on some money. I have also saved myself some money. If you trust you are the better player than just wait for a better spot imo. It is tough though.

04/09/2021 at 12:30 pm #5003TreyParticipantI am assuming this is online. If that is true then don’t assume someone was thinking of calling prior hands or even remembers them. So many online players multi-table and or just flat out multi task it’s a bad assumption that they are paying attention. If they had timing issues prior it only increases the likely hood they are multi-tabling. With that information just play ABC online at those stakes. It’s boring but you will profit and move up.
Now if this is like a live home game then this is fine to switch it up once in a while.

I might not even call the turn if I didn’t improve.(granted I’m likely not playing A-4 off in the cut off unless I am first to enter the pot and raising trying to buy the blinds.)

If the player has show the willingness prior to call off top pair I might even go as far as 225 that is player depended though. You can be confident you have the best hand at some point a set would have reraised.

But smaller flush draws might fold. Also it starts building If the board does pair or you quad up to price in others to call your all in bet.
However how played is still solid. I just don’t like letting 3 others draw to a flush.
04/09/2021 at 12:02 pm #4998TreyParticipantNot sure how your 2-5 game is or the player in question. Which could impact my thoughts a lot. But assuming you have a winning image and haven’t been caught doing anything crazy if I was your opponent I could likely get away on the river from AK, or a flush.
They could have had any number of things with that line. A small pocket pair, AQ,AJ, a heart draw that got there etc. However, on a double paired board, following a check raise on the turn and lead out on the river even if I had the Ace high flush I fold to a competent player in that spot. Granted some variables could come into play. If the player making the check raise lead out has shown big bluffing tendency’s I might look up light. The question is what is worse that calls your river bet? The check raise shows a lot of strength on the turn and then to lead out almost guaranteed you have a 7 or an 8.
I like the check raise on the turn to try and make people pay for draws. However, keeping in mind how strong that is on the river I likely check the river and try to get them to bluff or thin value bet me if they made the flush once I boated. I don’t feel a competent player is going to call me light there enough to make my bet worth it.
